Frequently asked questions
Do Square fees include taxes and tips?
Processing fees are calculated on the total transaction amount, taxes and tip included, then deducted before the deposit. That is standard across the industry.
Why is Interac cheaper than credit?
Debit networks charge fixed per-transaction fees rather than a percentage of interchange. Square passes that difference on: 0.75% + $0.07 instead of 2.5%.
Does the 2.5% rate also apply to American Express?
Yes. Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and international cards share the same in-person rate. Only the 1.5% surcharge for cards issued outside Canada is added.
Can I get a better rate than 2.5%?
Above a certain monthly volume, Square offers custom fees (Premium plan or interchange-plus pricing). That is exactly what Rive negotiates for its high-volume clients.
Do hardware prices change?
They can; we show the verification date on this page. The binding price is the one displayed by Square at the time of your order.
Are there fees for refunds?
Square does not charge a fee to process a refund; processing fees on the original sale are returned to the merchant for full refunds, under Square's current terms.
