What exactly is Rive Payments?
Rive Payments is an authorized Square reseller in Quebec and Canada, operated by Marchand M.C INC. (Montreal). We advise, install and configure Square for businesses, and support them after launch. The merchant account, payment processing and deposits are handled by Square Canada, Inc.
Is it more expensive to go through Rive than to sign up directly with Square?
No. Processing fees and hardware prices are those published by Square. Our support is paid by Square under its reseller program, not by you. For high-volume businesses, we can also negotiate custom pricing.
What are Square's fees in Canada?
As of October 3, 2026: 2.5% per in-person credit card payment; 0.75% + $0.07 per Interac debit payment; 2.8% + $0.30 per online payment; 3.3% + $0.15 per manually keyed transaction. A 1.5% surcharge applies to cards issued outside Canada. There are no monthly fees, setup fees or long-term contracts on the free account.
Is there a contract or a termination fee?
No. The free Square account has no minimum term and no termination fee. You buy your hardware (or finance it at 0% over 3, 6 or 12 months) and pay only the processing fees.
When do I get my money?
Deposits reach your bank account as soon as the next business day, free of charge. Instant transfers are available for a 1.5% fee (minimum $25, maximum $5,000 per transfer).
Does Square accept Interac?
Yes. In-person Interac debit (tap or chip) is accepted on all Square hardware in Canada, at 0.75% + $0.07 per transaction.
What hardware do I need?
It depends on your counter: Square Reader ($69) for a phone or tablet; Square Terminal ($399) for a standalone device that prints receipts; Square Stand ($249) for an iPad; Square Handheld ($449) for payments on the move; Square Register ($999) for a complete two-screen register; Square Kiosk ($249) for self-ordering. We recommend the most economical combination for your volume.
Can I finance the hardware?
Yes. Square offers 0% APR payment plans in 3, 6 or 12 instalments for orders from $49 to $5,000, on credit approval. For example, the Square Terminal works out to $34 a month for 12 months.
How does migrating from my current provider work?
We first check your current contract's end date and penalties. Then we open your Square account, import your catalogue and customers, set up taxes and hardware, and schedule the switch (often a Monday morning) to avoid any interruption. You cancel the old provider once Square is live.
Is Square suitable for a business doing over $100,000 a month?
Yes. Above a certain volume, Square offers custom processing fees (Premium plan). Rive negotiates those terms for you and compares the result with your current statement, line by line.
Is my data secure?
Square is PCI certified and encrypts payments end to end; you have no PCI compliance form to fill out and no PCI fee to pay. Fraud prevention and dispute (chargeback) management are included.
Do you offer on-site service?
Yes, in the greater Montreal area and, subject to availability, elsewhere in Quebec. Across Canada we set up remotely (video, screen sharing) and Square ships the hardware directly to you.
What if I have a problem on a Saturday night?
Square support is available by phone and chat in both languages, and your Square Dashboard runs around the clock. Rive remains your contact for setup, training and optimizing your account.
Do you also work in France?
Yes. Rive Payments also supports merchants in France with Square (terminal at €165 excl. VAT, 1.65% commission). See our France pages.
