Switch payment providers without the pain
Most Quebec merchants pay a rented terminal, statement fees, PCI fees and a rate they have never re-read. Here is how to check what you really pay, then move to Square cleanly.
No more rental
A terminal rented at $45 a month costs $1,620 over 36 months and still is not yours. The Square Terminal costs $399, once.
No more fixed fees
No monthly, statement, PCI compliance, monthly minimum or termination fees on the free Square account.
A rate you can read
2.5% credit, 0.75% + $0.07 Interac. No three-page grid with 'non-qualified' categories.
Software included
Register, reports, invoices, online store and customer directory are included. With many providers, each is a separately billed module.
Savings calculator
Compare your current fees with Square's standard Canadian rates. Indicative estimate, excluding hardware and foreign cards.
On these numbers Square would cost slightly more. If you process over $30,000 a month, ask us about custom pricing.
Assumptions: 2.5% on in-person credit; 0.75% + $0.07 per Interac transaction; no monthly fees. Your current fees are the ones you enter. The result is not an offer.
The switch in six steps
Re-read your current contract
Look for the end date, the automatic renewal clause (often a tacit 12 months), early termination fees and the required notice (30 to 90 days). Send us the statement: we read it with you.
Measure your effective rate
Divide the total fees on the statement by the volume processed. Compare with the calculator below. That number, not the 'headline rate', is what matters.
Open your Square account
Online, in minutes, with our reseller link. You need the legal name and business number, the address, the bank account for deposits and the owner's ID.
Order and configure
Hardware ships within days. We import your catalogue and customers, set up taxes, tips and staff, and run test transactions.
Switch on a quiet day
Often a Monday morning. The old terminal stays plugged in for a day or two as a safety net; your Square deposits start the next business day.
Cancel the old provider
In writing, on the date that avoids penalties, and return the rented terminal with proof of delivery. We provide a letter template.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose sales during the transition?
No. The Square account is live before the switch and the old terminal can run in parallel for a day or two. The switch itself takes minutes.
Can I keep my merchant ID or my current terminal?
No: Square provides its own account and hardware. Rented terminals must be returned to your current provider.
What if I have early termination fees?
We quantify them and compare them with your monthly savings. The termination fee often pays for itself within a few months; otherwise we schedule the switch for the contract end.
Do my customers need to do anything?
No. For them nothing changes: they tap or insert their card. Cards stored for subscriptions or deposits do need to be re-entered.
